A doula provides women and couples with continuous support before, during, and after labour. The presence of continuous labour support is one of the main recommendations set out by the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Canada in their recent Joint Policy Statement of Normal Childbirth found here: (http://www.sogc.org/guidelines/documents/gui221PS0812.pdf).

Study after study is proving that continuous labour support by a trained, skilled and experienced labour companion is decreasing the occurrence of caesarean sections, instrumental deliveries, and epidural use while providing countless other life-long physical benefits to both mom and baby.

The service a Doula provides has been proven to lead to shorter, easier and healthier births, as well as less postpartum depression, increased mother and baby bonding, greater success at breastfeeding, and an overall more positive experience of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. By addressing the emotional, physical and informational aspects of childbirth, the Doula ensures all wants, needs, and concerns of parents are heard, making this significant stage of life a positive and empowering experience.

The assistance of a postpartum Doula can build skills and confidence in parenting, help reduce postpartum depression, allow new mothers to feel more cared for, and help families be rested and relaxed during this “fourth trimester”.
